Code Enforcement Officer / Economic Development & Zoning Assistant
Location: City of Tomah, WI
Pay Grade: H (Non-Exempt)
Schedule: Monday–Friday
This position requires a standard 40-hour workweek during normal business hours; however, we offer some flexibility in scheduling to accommodate individual needs while ensuring business operations are met

The City of Tomah is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer / Economic Development & Zoning Assistant to support city-wide zoning initiatives, assist in economic development efforts, and ensure community compliance with local ordinances.
What You'll Do:
✔️ Code Enforcement & Compliance – Investigate complaints, inspect properties for ordinance violations (junk, weeds, abandoned vehicles, etc.), and ensure compliance with snow removal and property maintenance regulations.
✔️ Community Engagement – Respond to public inquiries, educate property owners about city ordinances, and coordinate meetings to resolve disputes.
✔️ Administrative Support – Assist the Economic Development and Zoning Director in preparing agendas, minutes, and reports for designated public meetings, support economic development projects, and process designated permit applications.
✔️ Inspections & Reporting – Maintain detailed designated, issue violation notices, and serve as the city’s primary contact for third-party inspection services.
✔️ Collaboration & Communication – Work closely with city officials, attorneys, and the public to uphold the City of Tomah’s high standards of safety and development.
What We’re Looking For:
✅ Education & Experience: Associate degree preferred (or equivalent experience), plus 2+ years of clerical or enforcement-related work.
✅ Attention to Detail: Strong ability to review property conditions, enforce city ordinances, and maintain accurate records.
✅ Strong Communication Skills: Ability to interact with residents in a professional, tactful manner—even in high-stress situations.
✅ Tech-Savvy: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and database systems.
✅ Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License & Outdoor Readiness: This role includes year-round field inspections in various weather conditions.
