Investigative Bureau

Welcome to the Tomah Police Department's Investigative Bureau. This bureau conducts proactive and reactive criminal investigations in our community. The primary function of the Bureau is to ensure that cases are complete and properly prepared for prosecution. The Bureau is comprised of two Investigators and is commanded by Assistant Chief Eric Pedersen.

Investigators are trained in various specialized areas. As a result of specialization they develop a high level of expertise in dealing with specific types of crimes. Through community outreach and coordination with other agencies the Investigative Bureau has been able to extend its limited resources or maximize its efforts.

Investigators are primarily tasked with conducting investigations in the following areas:

Arson:

Investigators, through the use of the scientific method, investigate fires and explosions for origin and cause within the City of Tomah. Investigations are performed in conjunction with the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation – State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Tomah Fire Department.

Drug/Narcotics:

The Tomah Police Department Special Investigation Unit investigates all types of drug/narcotics violations and assists with other large scale police investigations. In addition, the unit works with confidential informants, conducts surveillance, serves search warrants and acts in an undercover capacity.

Financial Crimes:

Investigators are responsible for investigating crimes in which a financial instrument is used by the criminal element. Investigators work offenses of credit card abuse, identity theft, counterfeit or forged checks. For tips on how to better protect yourself, please refer to the FAQs.

Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC):

The Tomah Police Department has one investigator assigned to the Wisconsin ICAC Task Force. The ICAC Task Force is comprised of Federal, State, and local law enforcement and is responsible for the investigation of offenders who use the internet, online communications systems, or computer technology to sexually exploit children.

Sensitive Crimes:

The investigation of youth related crime primarily focusing on the physical and sexual abuse of children. Investigations involving the abuse of children are conducted using a multidisciplinary team approach.
